My little tag line above sufficiently sums up The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter. It’s not a deep or complex story, due to its knowing nature it’s not suspenseful or mysterious either. But, it does help to further illuminate the life and times of one of the most important figures in all of Star Wars. That by itself, isn’t enough, because any number of other stories do exactly the same thing. If that’s the case then does The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter manage to stand out in any way?

My short answer would be no. It’s not a bad story by any means, but The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter isn’t a captivating story either. There isn’t much to get into in regards to the story, it’s a straight telling of how the future Grand Admiral of the Galactic Empire became enmeshed with said political body in the first place. It is interesting to see how he accomplishes this, but that interest isn’t strong enough to really draw the reader in.

I feel like I am bashing this story, and that’s not what I want to do. As I said, The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter isn’t bad, it’s simply a middle of the road story. I always have the toughest time writing about middle of the road fare, and The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter is no different. If you are a Thrawn fanatic then it’s certainly a must read, the same is true if you are a Timothy Zahn fan. Otherwise, The Adventures Of Thrawn: Mist Encounter is a tale that you shouldn’t avoid, but it’s not essential reading by any means and you really aren’t missing anything if you never get around to it.
